Music Channels


MTV (Music Television) - launched on August 1st, 1981

MTV is owned by Viacom.Viacom is a multi-billion American media conglomerate which works with cable and satellite television networks, movie production and also distribution with Paramount Motion Pictures Group. Viacom's and MTV's headquarters are situated in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

Since MTV was formed it has made a large impact on both the music industry and popular culture. MTV's success has been mentioned in many different media forms, from artists mainly in the pop genre mentioning it in their songs, to films and books throughout the world. During the many years of MTV, it has changed the way in which music is viewed within the public eye. By giving the consumer high quality music videos, and now more recently television shows, it has also allowed music and artists personal views to become more assessable to the public.

MTV is a multi-billion and worldwide company, controlling vast amounts of channels throughout the world, for instance MTV UK operates 16 channels solely in the United Kingdom. The network has also created a yearly Award Show starting in 1984 and called the MTV Video Music Awards or VMA's , which is still running to this day. Due to the success and public enthusiasm to this event, MTV then went on to created the MTV Movie Awards in 1992, and then followed up with a European version called the MTV Europe Music Awards or EMA's in 1994.

Recently with this connection with Paramount Pictures, MTV has been focusing more on non-music orientated programming. Such as video diaries, and behind the scene's interviews with the stars at the time. This is due to popular culture changing, and the ever improving technologies meaning that this type of programming is now possible.


Kerrang! TV Channel - launched Spring 2001

Kerrang! TV channel is owned by a British television company called Box Television, who is a content subsidary of Channel 4 and Bauer Media Group. Kerrang! TV is related to the popular Kerrang! Magazine, who's content are mainly focused on rock artists and is published by Bauer Media Group.

The first ever music video shown via Kerrang! TV was Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit. After this Limp Bizkit - Break Stuff was second and then Everlast - Black Jesus third.

Kerrang! TV allows for the consumer to choose what music video they want to hear, out of a selection.The consumer can ask for a video to be played by texting to a certain number. After other higher wanted requests are played on the channel, your video is then aired on the channel. This interaction with the consumer allows for a truly personal experience, allowing a wider audience to get involved and enjoy the channel.

The channel is only available via subscription packages via Sky Digital and Virgin Media, on channel 368 on Sky Digital and channel 342 on Virgin Media.


MuchMusic - launched September 1st, 1984

MuchMusic is owned by CTVglobemedia a Canadian media conglomerate, and one of the largest private media companies in Canada. MuchMusic is dedicated in bringing music- related programs to fans of pop music, and entertainment which will be of interest to the youth culture. The headquarters for MuchMusic is situated in Ontario, Toronto which is the most populated city in Canada.

Following a similar concept to MTV , MuchMusic has recently been airing non music related programs such as Girlicious, The O.C., and American Dance Crew. This new content has seen to have higher viewer ratings on the channel, and seem more appealing towards the modern youth culture.

MuchMusic also broadcasts films every Friday night, under its MuchMovie banner. Which supports how the channel is trying to broaden to a wider audience of consumers who maybe, aren't interesting in music.


Fuse TV - launched as (MMUSA) in 1994 and then (Fuse) May 19th, 2003

Fuse TV is owned by Cablevision through is subsidiary company Madison Square Garden, L.P. The channel mainly focuses on broadcasting music - orientated programs to its audiences. The network started of being called MuchUSA in 1994, this was due to the partnership between MuchMusic, CHUM (on July 12th, 2006 merged with CTVglobemedia) and Cablevision. In 2001 CHUM sold their half of the network to CableVision, then in 2003 CHUM revoked CableVision's license to use the MuchMusic and MMUSA names. Due to this action the network had to announce a name change of Fuse which took place on May 19th, 2003.

Spike Jonze (Adam Spiegel) - Born October 22nd, 1969


Spike Jonze was born in Rockville, Maryland in Pennsylvania and is a American director and producer, who's work ranges from music videos to films and television and commercials. He is currently the creative director of VBS.tv and part owner of a skateboard company called Girl Skateboards.

Jonze has been apart of many projects during his career, he is best known for his collaborations with writer Charlie Kaufman in the films Being John Malkovich released in 1999, and Adaptation released in 2002. He also directed and produced Jackass: The Movie released in 2002 and Jackass: Number Two released in 2006. Jonze is also co-creator for the television series of Jackass.More recently he has been director on one his most anticipated films yet, Where the Wild Things Are which was released in 2009.

Aswell as his abilities within the film industry he has also directed 51 music videos to date for a wide variety of artist's spanning many different genres. Such as Kayne West - "Flashing Lights", Tenacious D - "Wonderboy", Fatboy Slim - "Praise You", Daft Punk - "Da Funk" and many more. The most successful music video Spike Jonze directed was Fatboy Slims "Praise You", due to its success it was performed live in New York City at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1999. It also picked up awards such as Best Direction, Breakthrough Video, and Best Choreography.

Chris Cunningham - Born October 15th, 1979





Chris Cunningham was born in Reading, Berkshire in 1970 and is a film and music video director and video artist. Cunningham is highly skilled in animatronic robots and sculpture used in animation, this can be clearly can be seen in his music videos and throughout his filming career.

Some of his early work included working on the sculpture and animatronics for the film Alien 3 in 1990. This then led onto the film Judge Dredd in 1994, his performace during the film got him head hunted by Stanley Kubrick and led him to design and animatronic tests for the main robot character in the film A.I..

Cunningham has also directed many music videos throughtout his career. He has had close connections with Wrap Records since his first production for the band Autechre. His works for the group Aphex Twin's are perhaps his most well known. With the two songs "Come to Daddy" and "Windowlicker". His music video for Björk song"All Is Full of Love" won multiple awards such as the MTV Music Award for Breakthrough Video and the first ever music video to win a Gold Pencil at the Design and Art Direction awards. His video for "Windowlicker" was nominated for "Best Video" award at the Brit Awards 2000.

Michel Gondry - Born May 8th, 1963

Michel Gondry was born in Versailles, France and a french film, commercial and music video director. He is also an Academy Award winning screenwriter, and is well known for having a intensive visual style and his manipulation of mise en scene.

Gondry first got into film making by directing music videos for a French rock band named Oui Oui, in which he was also the drummer. His visual style and ability caught the attention of artist Björk, and in doing so Gondry was asked to direct the music video for her song "Human Behaviour". Furthering his contant with Bjork he went onto directing seven of her music videos. He has also worked with a large array of artists on one or more accasions. Such as Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers, The White Stripes and Radiohead.

Similar to Spike Jonze and Chris Cunningham, Godry has also been involved in feature films. His debut film was called Human Nature which was released in 2001 but wasn't much of a success. Godry's second film however named Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind released in 2004 and in collaperation with screen writer Charlie Kaufman, became one of the most acclaimed films of that year. Due to the success of the film Michel Godry won an Academy Award for the screenplay in the film.

According to the Guiness Book of Records 2004, Godry's television advert named "Drugstore" for Levi 501 Jeans holds the record for "Most awards won by a TV commercial".
