In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop Or Challenge Forms And Conventions Of Real Media Products

I wanted to create a music video which stereotypically conforms with the themes generated from the rock and metal genres. In the video I felt it should both include narrative story lines and also live band performance which allowed for greater creative freedom. This also allowed for the ambition I had for the video to be developed, these were to portray the unity of the band and to also tell exciting narratives to help keep the target audience interested.

My music video is similar to ones already released in the same genre, as it has a very dark and frightening theme, involving highly controversial subjects such as drug taking and gambling which help to entise and shock the audience. This could be seen as challenging the normal music video, but rock and metal and especially R&B genre's today usually show references of them to draw in the target audience. Also the locations are varied for each scene, this is a common theme in released official videos as it instantly gives the feel that time and effort was put into creating the perfect scene for the narrative.

Another similarity to already released music videos are the effective use of mise en scene. The mise en scene was a important part of creation of the video, its what made a personal link to the audience and gave each member a identity. All of the band are wearing black clothing, which is hugely conforming towards the chosen genre, except the singer who is wearing the bright red jacket symbolic of blood which allows him to have a added appeal due to him being the front man of the band. This is another stereotypical attribute of already released music videos, as most time is spent on the vocalist's appearance as they usually spending more time on camera which was also the case in my final video.

The use of real props such as each members instruments also drew influences from released music videos. I wanted the instruments to be realistic, like they were plugged in and the entire band was playing the song while the camera was recording. This is also shown in the editing of the final video with the instruments in time with the music to help support this image. This technique is evident in many music videos released, as it makes the target audience feel like they are witnessing the artist performing live.

Also the camera work was similar to released music videos. Different angles and viewpoints were filmed to show the diversity of each action. From wide shots of the entire band to close up filming of the guitarist playing during the solo and then first person shots used in the narratives. The use of first person shots was to try and create a connection between the target audience to the artists. This variation in camera work made the video look professional, and therefore conforming to the high quality of high budget official music videos.
