Research Into Exisiting Products (Including Ancillary Texts)

Music videos from the chosen genre of music used within my project, which is Rock and Metal.

Metal Genre

Avenged Sevenfold - Beast And The Harlot - City Of Evil - Released June 7th, 2005

This video features many different themes and ideas to help bring the song alive, it also controversial stereotypes women in a certain light, focusing mainly on their sex appeal. The video is very dark in appearance and features a large crowd, moving to the music the group are playing in a frantic manner. The band are wearing clothes which are usually worn by modern day metal groups, sleeveless t-shirts and tight black jeans. They also have many tattoos all over their bodies which gives each member an identity and also help to supports their bands image. It also gives them a rebel and dark personality which is stereotypical of the metal genre. The video also includes many adult themes, from drug taking to the sex appeal of women. Many people may finds this content upsetting or degrading that women are being portrayed in this way, other's may have a view that its just depicting the nature of the song, and by showing this type of controversial content it allows the user to understand the song title and lyrics more effectively. The video is also quite frightening in appearance, as it shows women being taken over by a virus or curse, which visually transforms them into a nightmarish grey figure or beast. The camera work throughout is very fast, cutting from many different scenes, during the versus it cuts back to the narrative of the video, then back to the band during the chorus and then using close up shots of the guitarist during his solo

Rock Genre

U2 - Vertigo - How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb - Released November 8th, 2004

I decided to use this video of U2 as it showed how computer generated imagery is used in videos today. U2's music is known worldwide, with touring around the world and their charity work they are highly recognised in the rock genre. The video has the entire group playing their instruments in a desert setting, each playing their instruments along with the song. As the song builds up, a sand cloud appears engulfing the band, then a black smoke is stretched out being all the members, and then later on the entire background moves and starts spinning and moving up and down with the music, this is all happening while the band are playing in a central circle. This effect could only be achieved with computer generated imagery and helps gives the video a shock factor which the audience will remember. The members are wearing all black clothing, to help them stand out behind the desert background, they are also wearing sun glasses, this seems to a continuous convention with rock artists, this could also be interpreted that because they are in a desert setting they are needed so they don't get blinded by the sun.

Music videos from genre's which weren't used in the development of the three products, but still have common conventions and house styles within them.

Pop Genre

S Club 7 - Don't Stop Movin' - Sunshine - Released April 23rd, 2001

British artists S Club 7 were massive in the late 90s early 2000,s, with a whole TV series dedicated to them airing on CBBC. With number one UK singles and UK number one albums and a string of number one singles throughout Europe they were known by the public. The video is taking place in a night club, the entire group are dancing and enjoying themselves within this location. The lighting is very bright, lighting each individual member of the band and the entire scene, coloured lighting is also used to emphasise the point that this club is lively and to also conforming to the bright and positive image pop videos usually show. Each member is wearing clothes of a individual colour, this helps them stand out from the rest of the crowd behind them in the club. A crowd has also formed around the group, showing that people are interested and gives them a sense of complete dominance in the club. The band also has both male and female members, this will allow for the band to liked by both sex's and to broaden the target audience for the video.

R&B Genre

50 Cent - Candy Shop - The Massacre - Released February 1st, 2005

50 cent is huge in the name of R&B and being a member of the highly acclaimed G-unit group it has further propelled his success within the music industry. With two albums to his name, Get Rich or Die Trying (2003) and The Massacre (2005) they have sold a combined 26 million copies, and both going to multi-platinum success 50 cent is widely known worldwide. The video is all centralised around 50 cent, having almost ever shot having him as the central focus point. The video also portrays women in a certain way, which could be considered disrespectful and offensive to viewers. They all seem to be wearing skimpy skirts and low cut tops, and having the stereotypical perfect figure. But this view of women are hugely used in the R&B genre so it is conforming to the attributes of R&B videos. Alot of jewelry or bling is used within the video, with the two expensive cars and jewelry worn by the women and the large manor house named "candy manor", this is all stereotypical of the genre in which the artist wants to show off their wealth and how their lives are the stereotypical view of a perfect lifestyle. The lyrical content within the song as well is offensive, with multiple black outs in which it could offend the listener. This type of language is typical in R&B songs, and could be interpreted that its this shock factor which has made the genre so unique and appealing to the youth culture.

Researched Examples of CD front covers which are used in the Rock / Metal Genre.

These are examples of CD album covers which have been officially released by signed artists. I used them to help me generate ideas and thoughts which could then be incorporated into the final product. This research helped in also providing a firm layout, which seem consistent throughout most of the covers.

A similarity between these covers are their dark and frightening appearances. With images of skeletons and horrific events taking place, it shocks the target audience, which in turn makes them want to find out more about the CD. The colour schemes used in the covers are similar featuring dark shades and font which of the opposite colour, so it stands out from the darkness of the background.

A common feature I notice when looking at the album covers was that hardly any of them had the artist pictured on the front. There was either a dark fantasy scene or grotesque looking figure, this could be to support the bands image, in being that they don't want the stardom of being on the front cover and instead they are all just about the music. Also the image on the front seems to be centralised on the cover, allowing it to have the most room and to also attract in the target audience's attention.

With the research gained from these existing covers i will use both their dark theme and strong layout which have been stereotypically formed by the rock and metal genres. I will design my own grotesque character, which will be centered in the middle of my cover, and also a font for the artists name 10,000 Flames which will look menacing to compliment he bands image. The same dark, evil appearance of the color scheme will help in creating a highly believable end product.
