Although music videos are very common nowadays, they are essential to success within the music industry. When broken down, however, music videos fall into three distinct categories or are formed through a combination of the three categories:
The Live Performance Music Video
The Live Performance Music Video
This category has the artist playing in either a real live performance with a crowd, or simulating the live performance on a stage specially for the music video. This would mean that the band would need to be playing their specific instrument in time with the song. This effect can be created via editing techniques, but the feeling of the band performing the song live should be evident for it to fit in this category.
Bruce Springsteen - Dancing In The Dark - Born In The USA - Released May 4th, 1984
The Narrative Music Video
The Narrative Music Video
In this category the music video should contain a consistent narrative throughout, with a strong story usually involving the members of the band. This category is perfect for linking the video to the lyrics of the song, as it allows for the artist to visually express what the song is trying to portray. Usually props and mise en scene play a large part in this category in allowing the audience to fully understand the narrative.
a-ha - Take on Me - Hunting High and Low - Released September 16th, 1985
The Imaginative and Creative Music Video
The Imaginative and Creative Music Video
In this category the music videos follow a completely random set of events. These should not be used in any narrative, and should have total separation from reality. This category is aimed towards the creative and inventive ideas artist come up with to truly add another dimension to their music video.
